One Voice Home > One Voice Press > King City Unveiling Press Release THE MONTEREY COUNTY ONE VOICE ARTS & LEADERSHIP PROGRAM AND THE KING CITY CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER TO HOLD "KIDS BEING KIDS" MURAL UNVEILING DURING THE KING CITY CHAMBER MIXER ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 2003 5:30P.M-7:30P.M. February 20, 2003, King City CA - On Thursday, February 20, from 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., The One Voice Arts and Leadership Program, in collaboration with the King City Child Development Center, will unveil the first mural created in King City by economically disadvantaged youth from Monterey County's One Voice Arts & Leadership Program. The public is cordially invited to attend the unveiling during the Chamber Mixer at the King City Child Development Center located at 231 Lynn Street in King City. The "Kids Being Kids" mural design was conceived to inspire the importance of kids learning and playing together. The 3-panel mural, which will be displayed in the reception area of the Child Development Center, shows scenes of children delving into their imagination through literature and art. As they play dress up and paint with larger than life paintbrushes, imagination sets them free; they are sharing their love of art with the community through colorful pictures and play. The mural's designer was Mark Molchan, the One Voice Mural Project's lead muralist on "Kids Being Kids." "This mural will enhance the entryway of our Center, making it a more pleasant place for parents to enter," said Kathy Walsh, King City CDC Program Director. "I appreciate the manner in which all of the One Voice Arts & Leadership staff have enthusiastically worked with our staff and our children to incorporate each and every idea and talent into the mural." "Right now, the One Voice Arts and Leadership Program is funded by the Monterey County Workforce Investment Board as a youth employment and training program," said Joseph Werner, Executive Director of the Workforce Investment Board. "Both the federally funded program and the King City Child Development Center paid for the costs of this mural. It is an excellent example of how like-minded people who believe in the value of developing leadership; teamwork and job-training skills can share in developing a project that serves all in the community. Youths from all over the County had an opportunity to come to King City for the first time and could directly experience the cultural diversity of our county. These types of activities bring our communities and its people closer together." Youth apprentices who were selected to work on "Kids Being Kids" included Juan Gomez from Salinas, Demetrious Huggins from Seaside, Ariana Muniz from King City and Marcos Tinajero from Soledad. The One Voice Mural project is a part of the Monterey County Youth
Employment Training Program and is sponsored by the Workforce Investment
Board of Monterey County. The goal of the One Voice Murals Program is
to enhance our youth's cultural and social awareness through increased
leadership skills, mural art, academics, work experience and field trips
that ultimately build a stronger and healthier community. |
