One Voice Home > One Voice Press > King City Paint Day Press Release THE MONTEREY COUNTY OFFICE FOR EMPLOYMENT TRAINING'S 2003 ONE VOICE ARTS & LEADERSHIP PROGRAM AND THE KING CITY CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER TO HOLD COMMUNITY PAINT DAY FOR NEWEST MURAL, "KIDS BEING KIDS" ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 2003 11:30 AM-1:30PM January 13, 2003, King City CA - On Thursday, January 16, from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., The One Voice Arts and Leadership Program, in collaboration with the King City Child Development Center, will host a community paint day for the first mural created in King City by economically disadvantaged youth from Monterey County's One Voice Arts & Leadership Program. The public is cordially invited to share in refreshments and paint day activities with the muralist participants just inside the King City Child Development Center located at 231 Lynn Street in King City. The "Kids Being Kids" mural design was conceived to inspire the importance of kids learning and playing together. The 3-panel mural, which will be displayed in the reception area of the Child Development Center, shows scenes of children delving into their imagination through literature and art. Playing dress up and painting with larger than life paintbrushes, imagination sets them free; they are sharing their love of art with the community through colorful pictures and play. The mural's designer was Mark Molchan, the One Voice Mural Project's lead muralist on "Kids Being Kids". "This mural will enhance the entryway of our Center, making it a more pleasant place for parents to enter," said Kathy Walsh, King City CDC Program Director. "I appreciate the manner in which all of the One Voice Arts & Leadership staff has been willing and enthusiastic to work with our staff and our children to incorporate each and every idea and talent into the mural. Both groups have learned a lot about how children can perceive their world; the children have been shown role models to follow in the youth of the One Voice Program." "This mural makes me feel young again," said One Voice muralist Mark Molchan. "Watching and painting with teens, working with youth, it is truly art imitating life." Youth apprentices who were selected to work on "Kids Being Kids" included Juan Gomez from Salinas, Demetrious Huggins from Seaside, Ariana Muniz from King City and Marcos Tinajero from Soledad. The One Voice Mural project is a part of the Monterey County Youth
Employment Training Program and is sponsored by the Workforce Investment
Board of Monterey County. The program hires economically disadvantaged
youth to design and implement works of art throughout Monterey County.
The completion of "Kids Being Kids" in King City will be the
80th mural to be installed throughout Monterey County by the One Voice
Arts & Leadership Program, making it one of the most influential
and unique public arts programs in recent history. The goal of the One
Voice Murals Program is to enhance our youth's cultural and social awareness
through increased leadership skills, mural art, academics, work experience
and field trips that ultimately build a stronger and healthier community. |
